CHAPTER NINETEEN

Girl Time

I WOKE UP to a light tap at the door. Streams of golden light shone in rays through the large windows, lighting up my room in a warm glow.

I rushed out of bed in a pink satin night shift I found in the wardrobe last night that was flowy enough to be comfortable in. I opened the wardrobe drawers looking for a robe to cover up with, when my eyes fell on the white fur cloak that was folded and neatly tucked into the drawer. I rubbed my fingers through the soft fur, thinking of the vampire who gave it to me and remembering the details last night. I quickly reached for the sheer robe next to it, that better fit this climate, and threw it on to cover up a bit.

Tyllis surprised me by appearing in the doorway with a large tray of food, her smile bright and welcoming.

“Good morning, Kylin! Avery and I thought you could use some breakfast! I snagged this tray from the servants before they brought it up, and loaded it with enough for a small army!”

“I would love that!” I smiled back.

Tyllis and Avery stepped into the room, securing the heavy door shut and behind them. She set the overflowing tray on the bed. My eyes flew over the arrangement that was filled with steaming cups of fragrant tea, a tempting array of fruit, and buttery pastries. Tyllis’s head snapped directly toward my ripped dress, still lying in a broken puddle of fabric on the floor. As she drew closer, I detected a sudden shift in her demeanor—a hint of worry creased her brow as her smile faded and her eyes darted around the room.

Avery chuckled. “Couldn’t wait to get rid of that one, huh?”

“Well, this needs to be done away with.” Tyllis clicked her tongue and quickly took the dress, shoving it into the bottom drawer of the wardrobe. She walked over to the window and unlatched it, so the bottom cracked open, letting in a light breeze.

I thought about Malik’s warning. Dragons were in this court. He was worried a dragon would smell him when he was here last night. With Tyllis’s reaction to my dress, I wondered if it could still smell like a vampire.

I looked at her from where I sat next to Avery on the bed. “Are you a dragon?”

Tyllis shot Avery a look before answering. “I am.”

“I’m sorry! Is that rude to ask?” I rambled, “I thought you were an elf, you look like an elf. I don’t really know anything about dragons.”

She sat on the bed beside us. Avery poured us all some tea from the tray.

“I am an elf and to answer your question, yes, it can be rude to ask.” She offered me a smile and had a small sip of tea before continuing, “Dragons come from a very old line of elves. Thousands of years ago, witches created dragons and werewolves to create a balance between the elves and vampires. Some wolves that lived on the Vampire Lands were given mortal form.
